A Mini-ITX novelty project with a difference, Bass Station is an oversized 1980s-style ghetto blaster containing a Linux-based Mini-ITX PC which plays MP3s. Not only that, but it contains an 802.11 access point and web server, making an instant collaborative jukebox, file server and bulletin board for all within range. (via bOING bOING)

Mini-ITX is a recent standard for miniature PC motherboards. Each is about the size of a 7" single, typically uses little power (often not needing a fan), and has everything from Ethernet to video to the obligatory USB and FireWire on the board. People have been using them to build all sorts of projects, from battery-operated Linux-powered robots to DIY consumer electronics, to modern PCs embedded in everything from bakelite radios to Commodore 64s.

These people sell modern PCs retrofitted into old Amiga 1000, Atari 2600 and Nintendo Entertainment System cases. And they come with emulators for the original machines. (Except that the PC's disk drive, of course, won't read Amiga floppies, and I doubt that they've interfaced the cartridge ports on the Atari and NES cases to the emulator software. If they had, it'd be pretty doovy.) (via Slashdot)
